Metamorphosis means “a transformation, as if by magic or sorcery, a marked change in appearance, character, condition or function.” The caterpillar spins a cocoon, hides inside and returns a butterfly. The concept of the wormhole is a way to describe this experience, that tunnel in the fabric of space-time through which the leader vaults into a new way of thinking and being. It fits the metaphor of an almost magical (and often bewildering) change, one that takes someone to an utterly different place and time than was expected.
Beyond the obvious crises - death in the family, divorce, etc. - four
distinct categories of wormhole showed up in my conversations with leaders,
each with its own unique set of characteristics:
